SCRIPTURE
1 John 4:16
God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in that person. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.
WORDS OF HOPE
What characteristic first comes to mind if you are asked to describe God? When believers are asked to name God's attributes, God's love is usually the first one that they identify. In human life, the word "love" is spoken much, practiced too little, and understood even less. What is love? Love exists only in relationship! Doubt it? Try writing a meaningful sentence expressing love and you'll always find that it exists in a related manner with something or someone else.
Love is the expression of goodness in relationship. Christians acknowledge that God loves us and loves the creation. True. However, let's look deeper at that divine love. Several months ago, I watched a PBS Discovery program about Christianity as practiced throughout 2000 years by the people of Ethiopia. Their organized pattern of divine worship is one of the oldest, but it also has some very different faith practices.
One of these is a celebration of mass baptism. After spending the night in prayer, many dozens of people assemble at a deep pool of water and, in one massive effort, jump in and splash about. To me it seemed to be a strange baptism. To them, it was both a community and personal expression of love.
The TV program concentrated on one teenage boy. As he splashed about in the water, I could not help but notice his radiant smile as he acknowledged the love of God filling his life. His smile caused me to smile and drove deep into my heart a more certain assurance that God was smiling on both of us.
God's love is universal and inclusive! It is not limited by any the differences which we see in others. It is abundant and freely given. Its presence in the life of all people has only one variable, will it be received or rejected. Yes, even that magnificent love of God exists in relationship. Meditate on that fact as you go about daily activity and interpersonal relations. How can you radiate God’s love? Can you help others become more receptive of that divine love?
PRAYER
It is my prayer that this week will be filled with God's blessings and that you will take some extra time to meditate on the vastness of the nature of God.
