Luke 6:12-16
Now during those days, he went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
WORDS OF HOPE
Jesus seems to have had a habit of changing people’s names. This is a common thread throughout scripture all the way back to Jacob who after wrestling with an angel has his name changed to Israel.
Names can mean a lot and so I try to abide by the idea that I call people by the name they request. This is especially important with my trans friends. It is considered an insult to call them by their former pre-transition names. “Dead naming.” It’s a practice used by those who are opposed to equal rights for all LGBTQ+ people and sometimes even makes its way into the media.
It's strange how people who claim to believe in the Bible as the Word of God fail to see the power of names and the numerous occasions where God changes someone’s name to align them more closely with their purpose or true self.
Though most of my trans siblings choose their own names, I believe that they are merely discovering God’s new name for themselves. If we are truly followers of Jesus, we should respect their choices as revelations of their true selves.
PRAYER
God of many names, may we always honor the myriad ways your spirit is manifest in us and our community. May we hear you calling us by our true names into the fullness of a life of abundant grace.
Amen
