Luke 10:16
“Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”
In this chapter of Luke, Jesus is giving instructions to his disciples. He tells them how to enter a city, who to stay with and how to carry his message.
Sometimes the people are not ready or willing to hear the message.
I am reminded at the beginning of the AIDS/HIV epidemic when scientists realized the transmission was through body fluids and primarily unprotected sex. It meant that casual contact was not likely to transmit the disease and there was lots of proof of that.
Still, some did not hear the message and many of those were health care workers. Hospital workers often refused to do the basic sanitary tasks for AIDS/HIV patients. Refusing to deliver meals, change sheets, assist patients do such things as go to the bathroom.
In Dallas the LGBTQ+ community responded and many of my lesbian sisters went into their male friends’ rooms and changed their sheets, fed them meals and helped them with their basic sanitation. Those women heard the message and responded with grace, love, and devotion. They truly carried the message of Jesus.
Sometimes God’s message of hope comes from the mouths of those you would least expect.
May we always be willing to hear God’s message and carry it to others.
Amen
