SCRIPTURE
Mark 9:17-26
“Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak, and whenever it seizes him, it dashes him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid, and I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so.” He answered them, “You faithless generation, how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy[a] to him. When the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. Jesus[c] asked the father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. It has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you are able to do anything, help us! Have compassion on us!” Jesus said to him, “If you are able! All things can be done for the one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You spirit that keeps this boy from speaking and hearing, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!” After crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out….
WORDS OF HOPE
This passage holds a special connection for me. When I was 19, I woke up one morning with my mother standing over my bad. She leaned down as I opened my eyes and spoke my name. I replied but couldn’t really move much. She explained that she thought I had a seizure and had called a friend who was a neurologist who was to meet us at the hospital that morning.
After a lengthy exam, the doctor confirmed my mom’s diagnosis and said I had indeed had a seizure. It felt a lot like I had been hit by a truck. Every muscle in my body ached as they had been tensed up in the extreme during the seizure.
Since that day, I have been on anti-convulsive medication. It was not a healing by faith, but faith was involved in that I and my mom had faith in the physician and his diagnosis and treatment.
That faith was tested on day about 15 years later when I decided I didn’t need those pills anymore and stopped taking them. After a week, as I was waiting in a parking lot for my then partner to come out of a meeting, I blacked out. I came to with my car in a ditch beside the parking lot and EMT’s pulling me out of the vehicle. Since that epiphany, I have continued to take my medication and have remained seizure free.
PRAYER
God of many names, grant me faith in the guidance you give my physicians and in the science they practice. Healing miracles can and do happen if we have faith.
