SCRIPTURE
James 4: 1-3
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
WORDS OF HOPE
As I grow older, I find I am no longer concerned with acquiring things, in fact I find my life cluttered with many things that I either no longer need or never really needed in the first place.
As someone who has often been a collector of things, from stamps and coins when I was a boy, to carnival memorabilia and coin operated machines today, I have a lot of things I have collected cluttering up my home. I see photos of new homes with lots of counter and table space and open floors where you can actually see the baseboards and I find myself wondering if perhaps that simplicity might be more attractive.
I now understand some of what I was doing was trying to fill some empty holes in my life. Something was missing and I thought that physical possessions could make me complete. It’s telling that about the time I met my partner I slowed my acquisitions and when I started attending Cathedral of Hope the importance of those things seemed to fade away.
Today, most of the collections are gathering dust and no longer interest me. I think it’s time to take a tip from Marie Condo and do some tidying up. She has a great way to decide what you want to keep and what you want to give away. She says hold that thing close to you and ask, “does this bring me joy?” If it does keep it and if not give it away.
As the scripture says, “You covet but you cannot get what you want.” Giving up that battle within myself and letting God in brings me joy. Everything else is just clutter.
PRAYER
May we hold each day of our lives close and ask, “does it bring me joy?” If not, may we give that day to serve others. If it does, may we hold it close and appreciate the gifts God has given us. Amen
