SCRIPTURE
Luke 18:15-17
People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them, and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. But Jesus called for them and said, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”
WORDS OF HOPE
I remember as a child going to the movies with my parents. One particular film was so enjoyable I actually skipped to the parking lot after the show. I was completely enthralled in the movie in the way only a child can be.
I wonder if this is what Jesus meant.
We must leave our ego and self-interests behind and leave ourselves open to the possibilities of a new life. We must re-learn how to live and start our lives anew.
It’s not an easy thing, and it doesn’t come without doing a lot of work, for the Kingdom of God is something we must create on earth. I don’t believe Jesus was talking about a quick fix. He tells us numerous times that it is up to us to create heaven on earth. “May your kingdom come. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
It is up to us to carry out that will, and we will need the energy of children to do so. Children are also born with an eagerness to learn, and we need that same eagerness to carry out Christ’s mission.
PRAYER
May we approach each day with the eyes of children. Let us be eager to learn. Let us have the energy and enthusiasm of children so that we might make every day of our lives matter as we seek to carry out Christ’s mission.
Amen.
