John 8:21-25
Again he said to them, “I am going away, and you will search for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” Then the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself? Is that what he means by saying, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are from this world, I am not from this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.” They said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Why do I speak to you at all?
WORDS OF HOPE
This passage is from the well-known chapter of John where Jesus is arguing with the Pharisees. As with much of the Gospel of John, I suspect very few words attributed to Jesus are verbatim quotes. Most scholars agree that it was written about 100CE and was intended specifically for the Hellenistic audience of Asia Minor. Aside from that, I find one quote here that seems very much like Jesus. “Why do I speak to you at all?”
This is the Jesus who, tired of arguing with those who will not listen reveals a very human emotion, frustration. It seems odd that someone who is portrayed as being the “Light of the world” in a previous paragraph seems to have reached his limit of tolerance.
This is the Jesus I can really identify with. Jesus, having spoken many times, and taught many lessons, and told many parables, faces an audience who apparently was so wrapped up in their own rigid rules and regulations, they could not hear the words being spoken to them.
I’m sure we all have faced similar situations. Sometimes people do not want to hear anything that contradicts their own beliefs.
I recently watched a YouTube video of a debate between “Flat Earthers” and an astrophysicist. Here were people so wrapped up in their own bizarre belief that because they could not see the earth as round that it must be flat. No matter how many facts the scientist showed them, they stuck to their crazy ideas.
“Why do I speak to you at all?”
PRAYER
God Let us be always willing to listen. Help us use the miracle of our intellect to find truth, even when it makes us re-examine our beliefs. Help us hear your voice still speaking to us through scripture, secular writing and the words of others.
Amen
