SCRIPTURE
Jeremiah 1:11-12
The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”
WORDS OF HOPE
The prophets in the Old Testament are always seeing visions and hearing God speak to them. I guess that’s why they are prophets.
Much of what is written and attributed to these mystics is somewhat opaque to us especially if we don’t know the context or the history of the period in which they were written. One thing is clear, Jeremiah believed God was speaking directly to him and he conveyed that message to the people.
I have always identified with the prophets. I was born “en caul” or “with a veil” a rare condition at birth that my grandmother said was a sign I would someday have the gift of prophesying. I would never pretend to be on the same footing as Jeremiah, but I do often find myself reading what I wrote and am surprised by it, almost as though the words were not mine.
I believe we all have this ability if we only open our minds and let God flow through us. It’s not something that we can consciously do, but when it happens it seems mystical. I firmly believe God speaks through each of us, in our words and actions if we let that happen. Following the words of Jesus is a good way to open ourselves up to that.
PRAYER
Loving and mysterious God,
May you use my hands and voice and actions to bring about your kingdom on earth. May I follow your guidance in Jesus’ teachings and find an abundant life.
Amen
