SCRIPTURE
Matthew 4:7
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
WORDS OF HOPE
I have a number of friends who claim to be atheists. I have no problem with that, but I do have a problem with them when they try to justify their non-belief by using selected passages in the Bible.
They fall into the same trap as fundamentalists. Many believe that Scriptures are the inerrant word of God. When faced with the many incongruities and contradictions in books of the Bible they have to twist their minds into pretzels to explain them away. For the atheists who justify their lack of belief by citing those same inconsistencies, it’s a simple matter of “if that is not true, none of it is true”.
Both are trying to put God to the test, but their definition of God is solely based on Scriptures. I firmly believe that any god who can be completely explained in the pages of a book written by humans, is a puny god indeed and not the Divine that I experience in my life. I believe Jesus knew this as well.
Demanding proof of God seems to me the opposite of faith. For me God is beyond my comprehension and beyond my abilities to accurately describe and as such is beyond any test I might derive. Testing God shrinks the Divine into a simple either/or proposition and that doesn’t work with the mystery and majesty that is the God of my faith.
PRAYER
God of mystery and majesty, beyond my understanding and meager intellect, I worship you in my acts of faith. May I seek your guidance and wisdom without demanding miracles and interventions. May I seek to follow the example of Jesus in my life and in doing so become closer to you and your grace.
Amen
