SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 1:27-31
Zion shall be redeemed by justice,
and those in her who repent, by righteousness.
But rebels and sinners shall be destroyed together,
and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
For you shall be ashamed of the oaks
in which you delighted,
and you shall blush for the gardens
that you have chosen.
For you shall be like an oak
whose leaf withers
and like a garden without water.
The strong shall become like tinder
and their work like a spark;
they and their work shall burn together,
with no one to quench them.
WORDS OF HOPE
Those pesky prophets. Always speaking of justice and righteousness and then telling us how we will burn like tinder. Don’t they know those oaks were planted by wealthy land owners and those gardens were created as beautiful places for those who owned the land to relax? After all, what is the point of having privilege if you can’t enjoy it?
Perhaps Isaiah is talking about that very thing?
I am fortunate to live in a beautiful city in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood, and yet every day I pass encampments of homeless people under overpasses and in vacant lots. Where is their justice?
There are children who attend the elementary school just down the street who have the only nutritious meal of the day at lunch in that school. Their parents work in dead-end jobs and scrape out a living and can barely afford to put a roof over their head and food on the table…sometimes. Where is their justice?
I believe unless and until we address the root problems of poverty and unemployment in our city, we will go down the road shown by Isaiah. The later verses of his prophecy add this:
How the faithful city
has become a prostitute!
She that was full of justice,
righteousness lodged in her—
but now murderers!
Your silver has become dross;
your wine is mixed with water.
Your princes are rebels
and companions of thieves.
Everyone loves a bribe
and runs after gifts.
They do not defend the orphan,
and the widow’s cause does not come before them.
Maybe it’s time we listened to his voice from thousands of years ago?
PRAYER
May we find ways to seek justice for all peoples and work together to build a righteous community for all.
Amen
