SCRIPTURE
Luke 2:16
They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph and the baby as He lay in the manger.
WORDS OF HOPE
It was just before Christmas a few years ago as I stared lovingly at my newborn great, great niece. I marveled as nurses, parents and the likes bustled all around her to ensure everything was going well. Clearly, she had command of their attention as she was taking her new breath of life. Her tiny little being was both powerful and vulnerable at the same time. I knew when I gazed at her precious face, I was welcoming the core of love.
Looking at her, I reflected on the importance of the Christmas story and how Jesus, as the vulnerable little baby, required the same sort of care as any other newborn. He was entirely dependent on others for his life and at the same time, embodied the power of Christ.
He was fed and loved by his mother, born into a community that cared for him and encouraged him in the path for which he was called. Jesus, as a baby, implies a certain vulnerability which theologian Carter Heyward describes: “Vulnerability is the giving up of control, the turning of oneself over to the common life, not to be absorbed, stepped on, or negated, but rather to experience ourselves as co-creators of the world we want and believe in.”
Mary felt pain and gave that part of her life out of love. She was committed so this baby could one day feel our pain and give his life so ALL humankind would know God’s everlasting love.
Just like birth, our lives are both beautiful and messy, and through the birth of this Christ child, we have been filled with the promise of hope and everlasting life.
Baby Jesus, both "Christ” and child, sent to reveal Gods plan and share the ‘Good News’ became God in the flesh and personified the power of being vulnerable, surrendering to the will of God.
PRAYER
Creator God, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, give us the wisdom to see that you came into this world as a baby; helpless, poor, marginalized and needing refuge so we can fulfill the same needs in others. In Jesus name, Amen
