Matthew 1: 16 -17
Matthan the father of Jacob,
and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.
Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
WORDS OF HOPE
This passage always confused me until I did a little deeper research.
First, if Jesus is the Son of God, the idea of a lineage seems a bit superfluous, at least it is if you try to read the scriptures literally. I often have to remind myself that they were not written as historical accounts but as theological works and as such they must be read more deeply and with the knowledge and perspective of the people writing them and some understanding of the times they lived in.
The number 14 appears here three times and that is important. Fourteen shows up in many places in the Bible. In the Jewish Calendar Passover occurs on the eve of the 14th of Nisan. That is often understood as the day of deliverance and to Jewish people reading Matthew the significance would not be lost.
The progression from Abraham, the spiritual founder of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, to King David who established the Second kingdom of Israel. The significance that his son Solomon built the Temple is hard to ignore.
The Babylonian exile is another milestone in the history of the Jewish people and then 14 generations later during another time of oppression under the Roman Empire comes the birth of Jesus.
Whether the story is absolutely true or not, its inclusion in Matthew is intended to highlight how important Jesus is to the Jewish people. It gives a clear meaning that He is the Messiah and a deliverer of the people of Israel.
This passage was meant to show the reader how important the following story was going to be. It is a literary wake-up call to readers to pay special attention. It still is, and the words and life of Jesus still deserve our “special attention”.
PRAYER
God of mysteries and symbols, may we learn from the words of your anointed and find deeper meanings for our lives. May we seek to follow in the way of Jesus as we begin this season of anticipation.
Amen.
