SCRIPTURE
Mark 7:17-23
When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. He said to them, “So, are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters not the heart but the stomach and goes out into the sewer?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
WORDS OF HOPE
I have long thought all Christians should be particularly grateful for this passage in Mark, for without it we folks living in the south would have nothing to eat, since almost every traditional Southern food has pork in it.
In this story, Jesus does what he often does for his confused disciples, he “cuts to the chase”. He shows the folly and misguided attention to dietary laws by getting to the meat of the matter. People are defiled by their actions and words not by what they eat or wear.
I think this is particularly salient in these times when our lawmakers are trying to govern how people choose to present themselves. They focus too much on physical appearance and not the underlying intent and reality. Bathroom bills, anti-transgender legislation would most likely be met by Jesus with a similar rebuke. It is not the way someone dresses or even what is between someone’s legs that defines their gender, but rather what is in their hearts.
PRAYER
May we concern ourselves with the words of our mouth and the meditations of our hearts and not the minutia of regulations and legalistic language. God doesn’t care about that, but rather how we treat each other and how we live our lives. Amen
