Isaiah 50:4-5
The Lord God has given me
a trained tongue,
that I may know how to sustain
the weary with a word.
Morning by morning he wakens,
wakens my ear
to listen as those who are taught.
The Lord God has opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious;
I did not turn backward.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today begins Pesach, known to the gentile world as Passover. Since I was raised in a Jewish household, Passover meals were THE big holiday each year. It was a feast and religious service that took place in the home. For those unfamiliar with Passover, it is the commemoration of the deliverance of the Jews from Egypt, and each year the Pesach meal known as the Seder is one filled with meaning and joy.
The story of the Exodus is told using the ceremonial elements of the feast. Through Matzoh, (unleavened bread), morror (horseradish), karpas (parsley), beitzah (roasted egg), zeroah (a lamb bone) and charoset (shredded apples, nuts and wine) the saga of Moses and the Israelites unfolds.
It is a tale told again and again every year to remind us of God’s faithfulness and it ends with a ceremonial sharing of the final piece of matzoh and a cup of wine. Sound familiar?
Jesus was sharing the afikoman, the final piece of unleavened bread of the meal and I believe he took the ceremonial cup of wine, traditionally reserved for Elijah whose return would signal the beginning of the messianic age, and shared it with those present. He was opening their eyes and ears to the new covenant.
The words of Isaiah ring clearly.
PRAYER
God of deliverance, who led your children out of Egypt and into a new promised land, may we listen and learn how ancient words and rituals can have new and relevant meaning to us as you “waken our ears”.
Amen
