Romans 4:6-13
So also, David speaks of the blessedness of those to whom God reckons righteousness irrespective of works: ‘Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the one against whom the Lord will not reckon sin.’
Is this blessedness, then, pronounced only on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised? We say, ‘Faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness. ’How then was it reckoned to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the ancestor of all who believe without being circumcised and who thus have righteousness reckoned to them, and likewise the ancestor of the circumcised who are not only circumcised but who also follow the example of the faith that our ancestor Abraham had before he was circumcised.
WORDS OF HOPE
One of my favorite things in C.S.Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia is in the The Last Battle where (spoiler alert) at the end of things a young soldier who fought for the army of the “false” god Tash is welcomed into Heaven despite his religious adherence. Why? Because he lived a righteous life.
Lewis says something profound yet simple. Righteousness is not based on your faith/religion. It is, or should be, inherent to people. It should be driven by an internal compass, a natural part of being human. God does not care about names, ranks, ceremonial practices. God cares about us and wants us to be fully human; which includes following what we should inherently know is good. It means being humane.
I think that is what Paul was telling the Romans. Perhaps having heard about the practices of the Jews and hearing that circumcision is a sign of belief, faith, and being accepted; the Romans were either afraid or distraught about this Jude’s/Christian faith. Paul tells them not to worry. He tells them that the first believer, who was the foundation of the Jewish faith was deemed righteous before he had undergone circumcision. In fact, Paul states this was on purpose to allow everyone to come close to God. Not to be flippant (well maybe a little) circumcision is only a public sign of faith in a nudist society.
This is what Lewis was reiterating and explaining by his story of the young soldier. This is what Paul told the Romans. Lacking the signs of faith will not cut you off from God.
The true sign of righteousness is following the example of the faith of Abraham before he was circumcised.
PRAYER
Great Creator, grant us understanding and strength to be righteous. May we be like Abraham; righteous from within our very humanity. Bless us and keep us today and every day. Amen
