SCRIPTURE
1 Peter 2.5-9
You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone," And, "A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message--which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of God who called you out of darkness into God's wonderful light.
WORDS OF HOPE
The Rocks of Lent
When we get a small rock in our shoe, it becomes all we can think about! It causes such irritation! And if we are walking on a sidewalk and accidentally step on a rock we did not see, it can cause us to stumble or fall or twist our ankle. What kind of irritations or "rocks" are blocking your full potential for an uninhibited walk with God?
During Lent we strive to remove barriers to our relationship with God. For some people that may mean fasting or giving up something during the 40 days of Lent.
Giving up significant food items for Lent does not make me more religious. It makes me grumpy!
I do better on my walk with God if I take on something for my Lenten practice. A Lenten study group is a blessed spiritual enrichment. It is always so uplifting to be able to share my soul with others who share theirs.
I contribute to the Lenten offering. You can select an amount that fits your budget. You might even like the practice of doing your gift each day in the Lenten folder. But the church will gladly accept it all in one check, if you prefer that.
Since we are talking about rocks, you might be artistically talented, and you like to paint a rock and give it away each day or one a week. Or you could place your rock along a sidewalk or walking path for many people to see. It could brighten someone's day more than you know.
Or you could clean your closet or home and remove one item each day of Lent to unclutter your life. Maybe those items would bless someone else, and you could give them away.
Maybe you might think of a kindness you could do for a person going through a difficult time. Offer to pick up groceries for an elderly neighbor. Hand out water to the person on the street, if you have already given all your blessing bags away. Offer an evening of childcare for a couple you know or a single parent. Make an Easter basket for a child who may not get one or surprise an elderly friend with one! Any gift of the heart you do is a gift to God as much as it is a gift to the person. And those things have a way of also blessing us as we give.
Have a blessed Lent. However you decide to walk with God these 40 days.
PRAYER
God, walk with us through the Lenten valley to prepare us for Easter joy.
