Isaiah 65.17
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;
And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.
WORDS OF HOPE
I’ve been living in the past a lot recently, not in the sense of repeating old mistakes or comparing the glory of the “good old days” with the current unrest and conflict that seems to permeate our society. I’ve had the opportunity to re-visit many important facets of my own childhood.
A few months ago, I finally gathered up a few stacks of vintage animation art that I inherited from an old Hollywood animator friend and turned them over to Heritage Auction for their recycling to the world of collectors. Because of that connection, I was invited to a reception of their current offering of TV memorabilia; mostly costumes from the early days. It was a rare opportunity to see them out of their glass cases and within touching distance. Being in the actual presence of these relics was akin to a spiritual experience. I could truly sense the presence of the Lone Ranger or Superman as well as connecting with my younger self when I had first wondered at their adventures on a fuzzy 12’ TV set.
I remembered my early training in fair play, ethical behavior, and compassion for the oppressed as I gazed on the Cordobes flat top black hat and mask of Zorro. I remembered observing the value of genuine friendship as I shared space with Captain Kangaroo’s pocket jacket and Mr. Greenjeans’ farm clothes. I remembered being a little older as I studied the lilac gown and purple stole of Endora, Samantha’s strong-willed mother on Bewitched, receiving her message as she demanded her daughter be who she was born to be.
Then I came to, not another costume, but the entire set of All in the Family. I was even older now, and I was especially aware of the existence of prejudice, cultivated ignorance, and fear of diversity in the world. I had been sure that a character like Archie Bunker was the last of a rapidly dying breed of haters that were sure to be extinct by the time I had reached adulthood. After all, we were living in an enlightened society. I was wrong.
Seeing that set was not enough to drive me to drink at the original bar from Cheers or grab Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s wooden stake and go on a rampage. Glancing at Davy Crockett’s coonskin cap reminded me that genuine heroes just don’t behave like that.
Auction houses like Heritage are acutely aware that one day “the former things will not be remembered or come to mind”, which is why they are attaching hefty prices to all of these old costumes and props aimed at the last generation that will care about them.
As for me, I learned about fair play, optimism, and hope from other sources besides the Mickey Mouse Club and I still believe that God is keeping the divine schedule of creating new heavens and a new earth. I am grateful to have been in the close company of childhood dreams that remind me we can still work together to make the fantastic come true.
PRAYER
God of inspiration, thank you for lessons that shape our lives, sometimes from the most unlikely sources, and for any opportunity to rekindle the sparks of your dreams and plans for our lives.
