Sacred words:
Do few things but do them well, simple joys are holy.
Saint Francis of Assisi
WORDS OF HOPE
Tomorrow is National Celebrate Joy Day. The website for this event says:
Celebrate the National Day of Joy on the last Wednesday of June, which falls on June 28 this year. We want to observe it by finding happiness outside the norms that society calls for. The search for joy is often attributed to material possessions but neglects family. National Day of Joy started when caregivers realized how important it is for senior people to be joyful. Enjoying everyday moments improves general well-being. It is not based on outward circumstances. This includes wealth and prestige. It is an ability to rejoice at all times and over the small things.
When I read this and remembered the words of Saint Francis, I was struck by the fact that it took over 800 years to establish a day to remember what a simple friar enjoined us to do. Francis understood that it is not wealth or power; it is not possessions or grand achievements that bring us joy. And while those things may, indeed bring some pleasure, I believe we can all look at the simple things that have brought us the most joy. The laugh of a child, being together with those we love, the playfulness of a kitten or a puppy, the loyalty of the family dog, are the things that touch us in the moment. It is also in the simple things that we accomplish, though they may seem trivial, that we often find joy. This may be learning and playing a piece of music, finishing a report, showing someone some simple trick on their cell phones that they didn’t know.
So, for your devotion today, I ask you to reflect on the simple things that of happened or that you have done in just the last month. Think about the joy that they brought to you; think about the joy they have brought to others. Live into the words of Saint Francis and realize that the simple things are, indeed holy.
PRAYER
Great Creator, help us today and every day to find joy in what we do no matter how great or small that is. Show us how to have joy in seeing others do the simple things that they do, so that we can share in joy with them.
