SCRIPTURE
Romans 12:2-3
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
WORDS OF HOPE
We all have perspectives about many things. Perspective is important and can influence our discernment. And so it is that Paul talks about the renewing of your mind. In Paul’s time many of the Jews expected a warrior savior who would lead a revolt against Rome and oppression. Jesus came with a new perspective that many were not prepared to see.
The idea of the messiah being a “servant”, indeed a “servant leader” was not in their realm of thought. The Jews had seen many leaders who used the power God gave them to strike enemies such as Moses did with Pharaoh's army, or Joshua did at Jericho. There are many examples and it is not surprising that is what they expected. And so, for people to come to be followers of Jesus they had to “renew their minds” as Paul says.
When Jesus was crucified it became even harder for those waiting on the warrior messiah to change their perspective. And even some believers must have questioned their own perspective. The arrival of the Holy Spirit would have been a great comfort.
But now in the book of Romans, Paul is writing to an audience that may or may not have ever been near Jerusalem. They may or may not have experienced contact with the first Christians. Although I have always understood that Paul’s audience was a Jewish enclave in Rome, their perspective away from the temple in the middle of Rome with it’s polytheistic theology must’ve had a very hard time adapting to the message of Jesus.
And so, it is then Paul reminds them to not be conformed to the world, especially the one they find themselves in, but to renew their minds, to listen to the message. And then that way they will come to see the good and acceptable way of Jesus.
PRAYER
Creator God may we always keep our minds renewed so that we do not become so convinced of ourselves that we are unwilling to see that which is good because it does not seem to fit into our perspective as it is now.
