SCRIPTURE
Acts 23. 14-16
They went to the chief priests and the elders and said, “We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul. Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here.”
But when the son of Paul’s sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today’s Scripture reading from Luke’s Book of Acts is a very exciting one involving political intrigue, an assassination plot, a young man’s courage in gathering and delivering important information, and a Roman commander’s integrity. It’s typical of Luke to gather and report such detailed information from one of the many eyewitnesses he interviewed to record both the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts.
Basically, it’s about a plot to kill the Apostle Paul instigated by forty conspirators plus their sympathetic community religious leaders who fear Paul’s considerable influence in spreading the Gospel. Paul is being held prisoner by the Romans awaiting a hearing on his dispute with his accusers. His young nephew, however, thwarts the plot by reporting the details to the Roman commander who takes immediate action and transfers Paul to another facility under cover of darkness.
It is likely that his nephew, listed as his sister’s son, was Luke’s source for the outline of the life-or-death event. He was probably quite young, possibly pre-teen, and very nervous, since the commander took his hand and questioned him calmly for the details. We know nothing else about the boy, since this is the only time he or Paul’s sister are mentioned in Scripture.
We do know that he played an important part in saving the life of his uncle, the most influential of all the first century’s Apostles of the message of Christ. He was a rare Bible hero who was determined, despite his age, to infiltrate a group of fanatics and prevent a murderous event that could have halted the spread of the Word. He was the first recorded member of the second generation of early Christians to keep the message alive.
As I scroll through social media today, I am encouraged to see the embodiment of Paul’s heroic nephew in young people who are driven to keep the true message of Jesus’ inclusive love alive and well in a conflicted world. There are those among us who are systematically attempting to assassinate the Gospel, while my generation has generally been ineffective in combatting their message.
But, in the new generation I see hope; articulate young people who are dedicated to the truth and are not afraid to confront the lies. Today, I thank God for them and for that young hero of the first century whose love for his uncle and for justice were instrumental in keeping Jesus’ Word alive today.
PRAYER
For two thousand years you have inspired new generations recognize and spread the Love of Christ to all their neighbors. Thank you that they live among us today. Amen
