SCRIPTURE
Matthew 6.26-27
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
WORDS OF HOPE
Are we ever satisfied? Toward the end of January, many people across our country are wishing for warmer temperatures. About a month ago, the same people were wishing for a white Christmas.
I remember that time in Dallas that I thought it would be beautiful to have a white Christmas. I loved the songs about it and that perfect layering of a white blanket over the city that seemed so romantic. That is, if we lived in a place that is acclimated to snowy weather. We do not.
One year on Christmas Eve we got our wish. It was one of those many years we had a 5 PM Christmas Eve Service for our large Children’s Ministry. There was not a trace of snow when we entered the building, but as all the children were exiting after their service, they were thrilled by flurries of big snowflakes, temperatures dropping to well below freezing, and a splendid white Christmas ahead; Christmas perfection for a child!
Later that evening, with slush and ice making the highways treacherous, the adult congregations were not quite as thrilled and had a rushed reason to get back home after the late services. Christmas Eve being one of the big giving occasions at church is vitally important. People are in a generous giving mood. That year, many of them missed the services altogether. Who knew a white Christmas would not be a Bing Crosby movie in real life?
What are some of the things in your life that fall into the category of “be careful what you wish for?” You never know when you’re wishing for the perfect relationship with a specific person, not knowing how that will come out. You never know what winning the lottery could mean in your life, thinking it can save a lot of problems, rather than creating them. We have seen this happen time and again with so many lottery winners. The reality is, we can all get plenty of wish fulfillment in this day of instant gratification and inflated consumerism. If I’m Preaching, it’s to myself.
One person’s wish is another one’s nightmare. In this era of Amazon and all the supposed treasures one can ever attain with the Internet, what are you wishing for today that you could live without? What is just enough? Having enough means something different to everybody.
It’s a balance between what we want compared to what we actually need. All kinds of variations on this theme make for a great list of reasons why it might be best to remain grateful and content for what we already have. Isn’t that God’s wish for all of us?
PRAYER
Help us to remember that what we need is what you have already provided. Amen
