2 Corinthians 8.9
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.
WORDS OF HOPE
“Bow your heads and pray,” is something that we have all heard said. Usually, at a dinner table. At the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy the world renown painting known as, The Last Supper, depicts our Lord at the center of the table with His head slightly bowed. He does not have the usual posturing of a man who, throughout history, is portrayed as projecting strength and authority. In contrast, whether it is paintings like the Lansdowne portrait by Gilbert Stuart to The Man with the Golden Helmet by Rembrandt, we usually see men with heads held high. In the case of The Last Supper, Jesus, the very image of God, is bowing his head.
There is a unique occasion where I remember seeing Jesus with a bowed head. It was in a dream that I had many years ago where I met Him for the first time in a garden. Once again, He was bowing his head. It was not until many years had passed that I considered to remark the posturing of his body as significant. There were many other noticeable details of the dream. Jesus was sitting on a rock, wearing a white robe, and the garden itself was unmistakable. All these points gave me the sense that God was purposefully disregarding the usual pomp that I have witnessed surrounding every world leader. Sometimes, however, it is the smallest of details which are the most significant.
Jesus is altogether humble, although no less a king. At least, that is the impression I get from a God who comes to serve. However, I am no less shocked today than I was years ago when I first had the dream. The body is another way of communicating. We have learned that most communication is non-verbal. Body language, tone of voice, and the eyes have their own language.
There is one other form of communication, that often for many, is the smallest detail which is being over-looked. It is so important that it just cannot be overstated. The message actions tell is the greatest of them all. Jesus’ life told a story so profound that with two thousand years of study, we still are no closer to deciphering all of what was being said. Marvel at this: who are we that God Himself would for us humble Himself, for we can all agree that in humility He served us?
PRAYER
Jesus,
How great Your love is. We cannot understand it. We do not know its depth or width, only that it is mighty. Truly, there is none like You. Amen.
