READING
What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.
-Sacred Words From “In the Bleak Midwinter” by Christina Georgina Rosseti
WORDS OF HOPE
The poem “In the Bleak Midwinter” has been put to music and is often song around Christmas time. Some years ago, I was thinking about it and realized that Christmas is only four days or so past the beginning of winter. So, I looked it up and midwinter is technically mid-January to mid-February; in other words starting right about now.
The above quote from this poem is the final stanza. And I think it is a good reflection on our relationship with Jesus and God. We tend often to think of what we can give to God in terms of material or financial gifts. The poem seems to indicate those two things in terms of the lamb and the wise men who we know brought gifts of gold frankincense and myrrh; they did their part. And certainly, those are important. But it is also important that whatever gifts we bring come from the heart.
This is what I believe is meant by being the church. Not so much the tithing, not so much the time, or service. Being the church means sharing in the heart of Jesus. That giving spirit, that loving spirit that Jesus exemplified throughout his life.
Giving our heart to God means we are prepared to listen for God‘s guidance, whether we are alone in our room, in service to others, or among other worshipers in church. And it further means that we are prepared to act on that gentle tug, or that slap upside the head that God gives us.
So, as I reflect on this time after Christmas, after Epiphany, before the Pentecost, in the bleak midwinter, I stop to think whether my heart is in the right place to walk with Jesus. And if it is all those things whether giving or serving will naturally flow from the heart.
So for reflection, I invite you today to sit back for a moment, stop, and think about Christmas just passed, Epiphany just passed, and what is to come. We should all ask ourselves “is my heart ready to give?”
PRAYER
Dearest Creator, who stands with us through the bleak midwinter, the renewal of spring, the blaze of summer, and the slowdown of the autumn, accept our hearts. Help us to keep our hearts in a place where they are acceptable to you, and we are comfortable in giving them.
Amen.
