Hebrews 4:14-16
Jesus the Great High Priest
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
WORDS OF HOPE
The letter to the Hebrew people represents the Son of God as the “High Priest” – a term very familiar to those who would make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, or those who lived in the city where the center of Jewish life and ritual was maintained. It was the Temple where sacrifice was made for sin, where the Ark of the Covenant lived and where the Chief or High Priest presided over the Holy of Holies. It was in this place that the High Priest would meet with God, separated by a curtain that would be torn in two on the day of Crucifixion.
Our Hight Priest, Jesus would make it possible to enter ourselves into the Holy of Holies, that Jesus would make it possible for us to approach God, not through an intercessor, but directly. Jesus invites us to “approach God’s throne with grace and confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
This God is no longer shut away in a temple or other places that we have designated as holy but is now free to be present in all places, in all times, and with the ability to be our help and guide in both good times and not so good times. Such is the confidence that we have in a God who is rich in mercy, compassion, and love. This is the God whose name I want to declare in my life. This is the One who has demonstrated these gifts and values throughout time and who challenges us to personify.
When God is created in our image, religion goes bad. It takes on the human form. In fact, I read recently that if God hates the same people that you do, you have created God in your own image, rather than being created in the image of God. I believe this to be so true in our own day.
The writer of the letter to the Hebrews knows that we must hold on to our faith in the good and the not so good, that Jesus demonstrates the more excellent way, and that as we strive to become more like Jesus, we too will bare that name, those qualities that are the hallmarks of what it means to be a follower, an imitator of Jesus.
Today, as we think about Jesus as the Great High Priest, I invite you to think about the God who calls forth in us all the “Great High Priest”– the God who grows within us, taking away or saving us from the thoughts and actions of hatred, judgement and injustice and replaces them with the thoughts and actions of love, acceptance and justice for us all.
PRAYER
God, as we acknowledge the name of Jesus this day, the Great High Priest who demonstrated, in action, the presence of God with us, help us to claim that name for ourselves as we demonstrate, in action, the presence of God through us. Amen.
