WORDS OF HOPE
Billy’s Bliss
Throughout my life, I have become aware of an actor named Bill Mumy, known as Billy Mumy when he was a child. His career began out of an accident. He has spoken often about the influences in his childhood, watching tv shows like Superman and Zorro. In part, this came about because he was playing Zorro one afternoon at home and fell, breaking a leg. His leg went into a cast and he was sequestered for about 12 weeks. This left him to watch afternoon TV shows that captured his imagination and became the spark for his career. He was so inspired by George Reeves as Superman and Guy Williams as Zorro that he said he wanted to be “inside the television set” so he could become a superhero like they were. He got his wish and went on to act in over 500 different TV shows, commercials, and movies. He is best remembered as Will Robinson on the popular outer space adventure series Lost in Space and in a few different other roles on The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock presents; these among countless other TV and movie appearances.
The thing that fascinates me is that he didn’t know whether he had the talent to do the thing he loved, but he did have the drive. To be sure, he did not think to himself, “I have talent and I want to share it” but rather, “I want to be THAT!” According to critics and fans, his acting is profound, and he is one of the performing communities most compelling artists, sharing his gifts, even beyond acting, as a composer, painter, musician, and humanitarian. Admittedly, some of these traits are learned with life experience, of course.
The thing that I share with him is that we both had the drive to do certain things with talent neither if us knew we had and we were both blessed to have the ability to carry out our gifts. I know this is not automatic. Until I became a fan of his, I had not realized that by following my bliss, as he had, I would be sharing that same inspiration Mr. Mumy has shared throughout his entire life. I did not realize while seeing him in so many different roles, he was following completely his heart’s desire, on top of that he is authentically “real good” at what he does. He’s still online every Wednesday hosting The Real Good Radio Hour exploring the past and present of modern music. -Just another example of sharing the best of yourself.
The long way around to the point is to do the things in life that you enjoy doing, despite what we must do to pay the bills. I am convinced that whatever talent each of us has is a direct gift from God and nurturing that gift gives us the greatest happiness we can experience in life; growing that happiness within yourself. What do you do to create that? What part of you do you share with others behind the scenes that helps somebody else have a better life? I am blessed to have been able to recognize and enjoy this wonderful thing, which I know isn’t often too common. I’m nothing like Bill Mumy, and he is nothing like me, but I certainly we enjoy sharing some of our overlapping interests in life. I was inspired through our mutual love of the George Reeves Superman we enjoyed a phone conversation and still innumerable texts about anyone named Dr. Smith.
I’m also quite content to have seen all the diverse ways he shared his talent that unknowingly inspired me; whether it was from Lost In Space, or banishing very bad people to the corn field in the Twilight Zone… and even better playing his guitar at home, the things that we can all share, might be intangible or unnoticed. It’s not about popularity.… But in his case, it is about inspiration. Isn’t that Devine?
PRAYER
Loving and generous God may each of us use the talents and gifts you continually give us to bless and enrich the lives of our neighbors. Amen
