SCRIPTURE
Psalm 119. 1-7
Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who keep God’s statutes and seek God with all their heart— they do no wrong but follow God’s ways. You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws.
WORDS OF HOPE
In the days and nights of Advent, many of us thumb through our Bibles looking for words of God on which to meditate during this Season of Anticipation. Psalm 119 has always been an excellent choice as it reminds us of the value of God's instructive decrees to improve our walk in daily life. Now, let's consider what we can anticipate through God’s word in this Psalm.
What exactly is God’s word? Weren’t the words of the Bible written by people? Some of the Psalms were written by King David, but many more were composed by Temple singers and poets for use in Jewish worship. They expressed human needs, fears and pleas for divine guidance and are based on Israel's historic interaction with God. As Christians, you and I have a richer source of God's instructive words because we have access to the ministry and teaching of Jesus, guidance of God's Holy Spirit, and counsel of many wise fellow Christians.
The purpose of God’s word and guidance remains the same. Like the earlier Jews, we have an opportunity to tap into the divine counsel which allows us to live in harmony with God's desired purpose for humanity. These words of guidance offer illumination to our confused hearts in troubled times. We can't say to God: "I don't see what you want me to do with this problem". We should say: "What will you teach me to do?" God's instructive words are a gift to humanity.
They have been given to us for assistance to live a life which is filled with inner peace and joy. However, we must take the gift and commit to follow the instruction. "Happy are they who keep the decrees of God's word." (Psalm 119:2a)
PRAYER
May I receive the gift of your words of guidance with joy in the anticipation of the greatest Divine gift of all at the climax of this Advent Season. Amen
