No one can say, “What is this?” or “Why is that?” —
for everything has been created for its own purpose.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today is “The Date to Create”; which I must admit, I had to look up. Here is the description I found.
So, let’s be honest, most of us have ideas for projects in our mind that we’d love to complete, but we just don’t have the time. Whether it’s making art, improving your home, or getting started on that new business venture, it’s easy to keep putting it off forever and let the idea stay inside your head. The Date to Create is a day to get rid of your excuses and spend the day getting that project started. Sometimes starting can be the hardest part, but once you get going you can usually keep the momentum alive. Start now and your future self will thank you for it.
I must first make a true confession and say that I am guilty of not getting started. But from everything I’ve read about creativity these words ring, true; starting is off is the hardest part. I once knew a priest who said he felt that the words in Genesis saying man was made in the image of God, was not so much a visual physical thing. His opinion was that the creativity that God has is instilled in humankind. This seems to be one of the things that God and humans have in common, an inherent desire and ability to create. I’ve always liked that idea even though I’m not 100% sure that the theological basis of that is valid.
Not everyone wants to start a new business adventure, not everyone needs home improvement, not everyone feels the drive to create art. But today for a devotion look inside yourself and see if there isn’t something that you haven’t done that you may have toyed with the idea of doing; and do it. It doesn’t have to be complicated. You might just get some Play-Doh and try your hand at sculpting. You might try writing a poem, or a short essay, or your own devotion. Take your favorite song, tune, and write new lyrics for it. Take your camera or your phone camera and see what sort of pictures you can take. Or what kind of videos you might make.
And if you are someone who already does painting or sculpting or writing, let me suggest you that you pick up some other creative form. And whether you are starting on something new that has been in your head or whether it is something that has just come to your mind as something you want to try this is a day to start. No one will expect, and you should not expect, to have a complete project by the end of the day.
So, honor the God who created you by being creative. Reflect, as in a mirror, the gift of creation that is you.
PRAYER
God, who created us, stir up in us that creativity that we share with you. Give us the strength to proceed, the wisdom to know what is good for us, and the feeling of joy that comes from our connection to You. Amen,
