Philippians 2.7
but he emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of humankind.
WORDS OF HOPE
Ever notice when you’re in a hurry you receive messages that need attention now. Can it wait? Probably, but some things need consideration, emptied, or filled up, just to keep us moving.
Recently I was on a deadline, truly needed to stay focused, and found myself constantly distracted by something that was either empty or needed to be emptied, right then!
The waste bin in the house needed emptied, the car was almost empty, and both the animals were waiting for their empty bowls to be filled. Even my computer was reminding me to empty outdated, never used folders. It seemed like every container in my site, including animals, was yelling for attention.
At that point, any previous study of Zen or other meditating modalities flew out the door. Right as I am convinced the devil incarnate is keeping me distracted, I ask myself if God is reminding me to slow down, empty myself and let go of control.
As human beings we are vessels, containers that can be filled up when empty. We can either fill ourselves up with delight, anxiety, harmony, or fear. These vessels, our bodies, are God’s design and when filled with the spirit of love, can be used to bless others. Jesus emptied himself on the cross so humankind could be filled with the gift of eternal love.
Like any container that gets full of useless items, we, as Christians, need to empty ourselves as well. It can mean we need to empty out personal expectations and be filled with an anticipation for God to reveal our next steps. When we empty ourselves, we invite God to use us with purpose, to become the voice, hands, and feet of God. Like Christ, we empty ourselves so we can be refilled to share Gods love and grace with others.
PRAYER
Creator God, by your Grace and as your vessels, give us both the strength to be emptied and the wisdom to be filled. In Jesus name, Amen
