Romans 1:20
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes, eternal power, and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made.
WORDS OF HOPE
The Hospitable Woman
Consider a mother and at what costs she provides a home for her children. A good mother offers a clean home for her children without asking for anything in return. If the mother neglects to instruct her children, then they will never learn to clean up after themselves. Imagine the mother, day after day, cleaning up their messes. So big is the mess that she can’t clean it all by herself, but she never complains. New guests come into her home after the children are old enough to move out and they leave holes in the walls, mud on the floors, trash in the bedrooms, and destroy the furniture. After scores of years and many guests, a once beautiful home is unrecognizable under the decay. Now, the mother is old, too old to do anything about it, and worse, has taken ill breathing in the air that has become toxic from the garbage. She is dying now, because no one cared enough to help her.
How would you feel if this was your home or your mother? What would you say to your children when they asked what happened to their inheritance? Who would care? Consider the woman in the story, consider all that she gave and all that she got in return. For the woman is the Earth and she is the home we all share. We are the guests and the mess is ours. The water, air, and land are sick with our pollution and our children are living in it. What’s more, the Earth does not complain, and yet, her cries are all too easy to hear.
Will we grieve her when she is gone, or will we be the ones who fall ill from a home that can no longer support us? Can we not all see that this is a woman who is very sick? Even our children are sick. If we do nothing, then we never deserved them. If we say nothing, then our silence will be what kills us. We cannot change the past, but we can change our future. Countless lives are in our hands. Let us not be grieved by the size of the task ahead of us but let us be overcome with joy because we will be the ones who provide a beautiful home for our children. The Earth needs saving, and the people must respond, because we are the threat and must become the solution.
PRAYER
Glorious Creator,
Forgive us for how we have abused your creation. We need you now, to speak to everyone’s heart and to open everyone’s eyes. Protect the beauty you gave us and grant us wisdom so that we may be worthy of her. Let it not be too late to change, but change us, and in so doing, protect our home. The world You made is so beautiful. Let it continue to be so. Amen.
