READING
The movement of the Spirit of God in the hearts of men and women often calls them to act against the spirit of their times or causes them to anticipate a spirit which is yet in the making. In a moment of dedication they are given wisdom and courage to dare a deed that challenges and to kindle a hope that inspires.
-Howard Thurman, African American theologian, author, educator, civil rights leader and philosopher.
WORDS OF HOPE
February in the United States is Black History Month, a celebration of the profound achievements Black Americans have made and continue to make in the national and spiritual growth of this country. The month was first officially recognized in 1976 by President Gerald Ford calling on all Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” To begin this month, the Cathedral of Hope Devotion Ministry offers the following short poem by Jonathon McClellan for our consideration and meditation:
The Eight Questions That Every Soul Will Have To Answer:
How can there be world peace without the inclusion of the whole world?
How can there be inclusion without forgiveness?
How can there be forgiveness without healing?
How can there be healing without empathy?
How can there be empathy without pain?
How can there be pain without wisdom?
How can there be wisdom without love?
How can there be love without you?
PRAYER
We are glad to be called Thy children, and to dedicate our lives to the service that extends through willing hearts and hands to the betterment of all humankind. We send a cry of Thanksgiving for people of all races, creeds, classes, and colors the world over, and pray that through the instrumentality of our lives the spirit of peace, joy, fellowship, and brotherhood shall circle the world. We know that this world is filled with discordant notes, but help us, O God, to so unite our efforts that we may all join in one harmonious symphony for peace and brotherhood, justice, and equality of opportunity for all. - Mary McLeod Bethune
