2 Samuel 1. 11-12, 16
The Lord declares to you that the Lord will establish a house for you: “When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish your offspring's kingdom...Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.”
WORDS OF HOPE
Today's reading is from the prophecy of God delivered to the elderly King David by the Prophet Nathan. In the Season of Advent, we review the words of many Prophets from both Testaments, predictions that are finally fulfilled through the coming of the Christ into the world.
David, in his final years on the throne, looked around him and realized that some of his sons were scoundrels and his kingdom was not in a stable condition. He wanted to establish a legacy that included a permanent physical structure of palace grounds for his line of descendants, with the centerpiece being an opulent Temple to the Lord. Nathan assured him that his dream would be realized, but not in David's lifetime. The Temple would be built by his offspring.
David's son, Solomon, did build his father's dream Temple, but from a physical perspective, the rest of the prophecy struck out. Solomon's magnificent Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians, the people of God were dispersed or taken captive, and the house, the kingdom, and the throne of David gave no indication of enduring forever, no happy ending to the dream.
At this point in our story, however, it is essential to remember that the Bible is not just a sketchy and sometimes vague account of ancient middle eastern history. It is a collection of spiritual books. No human house of royals can endure forever, but the spiritual descendant of the House of David can and does. The One on whom we await during Advent is both the physical and spiritual fulfillment of Nathan's prophecy. Through his adoptive father, Joseph, Jesus is the direct offspring of David and through his mother, Mary, he is also descended from the High Priests of his people, the Levites. These were the spiritual leaders of the Hebrew people, the tribe of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam; prophecy fulfilled with a bonus.
Unlike the tentative rule of King David's rather volatile and dysfunctional family, the reign of Jesus will last forever and we, the spiritual beneficiaries of that ancient prophecy, have the opportunity to celebrate that ‘forever promise” this Season, to bring Hope to our hearts and Joy to the World!
PRAYER
Steadfast God, may we remember this Season that the Prophecy of Nathan was not fulfilled by the Advent of Jesus for almost a thousand years, but we are blessed know and share the love of Christ every day.
