Job 12. 7-10
Ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you,
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
In God’s hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all humankind.
WORDS OF HOPE
Sometimes I can’t grasp the logic of the liturgical calendar; the length of some church seasons and the brevity of others. It was obviously compiled by residents of the Northern Hemisphere since so much of it is based on events coinciding with the seasons of the year, but since I am a resident of the Northern Hemisphere, I can understand a good reason the Season of Eastertide lasting for 50 days.
In Jewish tradition, the holiday celebrated at the time Christians observe the Resurrection was called the Feast of First Fruits. It was the time of year when the seeds began to make their first appearances as sprouts, new life, the hope for beginnings. Of course, that new life took time, it was not ended in one day. A big percentage of people consider Easter morning to be the climax and happy ending after enduring the Season of Lent. Yet the liturgical calendar reminds of the fact that Easter Sunday is just the beginning of the miracle. We have 50 days left to contemplate the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and Resurrection. And meanwhile, we are constant witnesses of the world around us demonstrating that glory.
This spring, I have been spending a little more time than usual taking part in the world’s oldest profession: tending the garden. Gardening was, after all, the first official career God assigned to Humankind and one that was a constant reminder of the wonders that surrounded those two main players in the Eden story. Now, in this Christian era, the reminder to me is of the First Fruit of all Creation and the Resurrection event reflected in every new day lily that reveals its golden face; a new life in a weary and disconcerting world.
Our liturgical ancestors knew that Easter Sunday could never be long enough to tell the whole story of an event that forever changed the world. 50 days is not long enough either, but it’s a good start and during that time I intend to invite every marigold, iris, petunia, and Madagascar periwinkle to remind me of their own version of that unfolding miracle. The poet who gave us the Book of Job understood this. Our greatest spiritual director, if we pay attention, is the Creation itself.
PRAYER
Creator God, may we be the blossoms of your garden during this Eastertide Season and beyond. Give us the heart of Jesus to recognize the profound teachings this spring presents to us that we may guide others toward their own resurrected lives. Amen
