1 Peter 1. 13-16
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
WORDS OF HOPE
This passage in 1 Peter calls us to seek obedience to following God first in all things and to ignore the things that pull us away from being Christ-centered. We pursue being Christ-centered out of God’s endless grace towards us. There are 3 main ways to pursue being Christ-centered according to this text. By preparing for obedience; setting our mind to obey including self-control, and having hope in Christ.
It can be said that God made us in God’s image to be dependent upon God and our hope is an example of that dependence. Having a mind focused on Christ means that we should be attuned to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and pursuing the idea of loving our neighbor. Throughout the Holy Scriptures we see a God of love that teaches us about above all else to love your neighbor as yourself. If we work on being obedient to Christ through love, then in theory we would not have time to judge or ‘wander off’ from God. As we work on being spiritually alert to the things that are of Christ and to the things that are not of Christ.
As we work on being grace-filled loving people, let us be reminded that God never leaves or forsakes us. God is with us in the journey of being better Christians and better people. Let us continue to work out our faithful Christian living with ‘fear and trembling’ but also with hope and joy in the resurrection of Christ. We are Easter people with hope in a loving grace filled God and blessed assurance that Christ will come again.
PRAYER
Thank you, God, for the ways that you call us to be faithful people. May we practice being in faithful loving relationship with you and find peace in your grace. Let us celebrate being Easter people, celebrating the small ways of daily resurrection as well as your return one day. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
