1 John 3:17
If anyone has material possessions and sees their brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
WORDS OF HOPE
While I grew up in a lower middle-class family, I never thought of us as poor. My parents told me a lot “we can’t afford that” but it wasn’t a big deal. I usually got what I wanted for Christmas, and we did not miss any meals. They always found money for me to go to summer camp and most things I wanted to do. I knew there were kids who went to Disneyland on vacation while we only went to Grandma’s, but it was not a big deal.
I knew lots of people who were in worse financial shape than us. Mother’s older sister was a single mother of 5 kids, and she always struggled to keep food on the table for them and provide all their needs. I have a very vivid memory of going to their house and fixing lunch one day (I can’t remember why). All I really remember fixing was BBQ wieners! I sliced them in half long ways and covered them with the BBQ sauce. I cooked it in the oven and opened a couple of cans of vegetables. This was WAY before microwaves were invented! I do not really think we ever ate the BBQ wieners like this at home. I do not know where I got the idea. I was only 11 or 12 at the time.
After our grandparents died, we only got together with cousins at funerals. So, Facebook has helped me reconnect with my cousins on both sides of my family. A few years ago, one of the cousins who I had fixed BBQ wieners for was coming through Texas. I met up with him and his wife in Round Rock. After we visited awhile in his hotel room, we headed out to eat. On the way to Cracker Barrel, he said “I have waited all my life to be able to afford to buy your lunch. This is so special to me!” I was so surprised and we talked about the BBQ wieners and how much their family struggled. I did not have any idea that they even remembered my first effort at fixing a meal for someone!
Life is funny and the things that we do for others make a mark on our lives and on theirs. It is amazing to be able to realize so many years later that such a small thing meant so much to my cousin. We are both in our seventies now. This childhood memory shows us how important it is to make memories with your family and friends. But also, how important it is to make life better for others one simple meal at a time!
Cathedral of Hope provides an easy way for us to provide a very important meal for people in need. Each Thanksgiving we offer members the opportunity to purchase fixings for the
complete dinner for those in need. If your budget does not allow you to purchase a full meal, you can join with a friend or your small group to purchase the meal together. It is amazing to be part of purchasing and /or giving out these meal baskets to the people who come to pick them up at CoH each year. It is the day that we are most the CHURCH! Giving the canned goods, a turkey and cornbread mix so a complete Thanksgiving dinner can be prepared allows a family to have a “normal” Thanksgiving. We usually give out 500 baskets of all that is needed to prepare the complete Thanksgiving dinner. What a true blessing!
PRAYER
God of abundant love. We thank you for opportunities to share of our blessings with those who need our help to make their life better. Please help each person who receives our meals to see your love through our gifts.
