WORDS OF HOPE
Ancient Words of Wisdom for Today
For morning prayer this week, quiet your heart with the Centering Prayer. After reading the daily thought, take time to be quiet with it and let God's Spirit talk to you about what you've read. Always listen for God's voice.
Today’s short reading is from the wisdom sayings found in the Jewish writing called Wisdom of Yeshua son of Sirach which is part of the apocryphal books in the Roman Catholic Bible. Ben Sira composed this book of instruction sometime before 180 B.C.E. Apparently it was used in a teaching program for young Jewish boys were being prepared to assume adult roles in the Jewish community. Its wisdom was highly regarded by Jewish rabbis; therefore, it is possible that Jesus of Nazareth and the apostle Paul were taught some of these words. Sometimes, this book is titled Ecclesiasticus (don't confuse it with Ecclesiastes which is found in the Hebrew canon of wisdom books). So here goes, learn from these ancient words as a guide for wise living today.
Let’s say the reading again: "From a spark many coals are kindled." Whenever a person is involved in a heated argument, it is easy to let loose with a few little words to ridicule the other side or to put a knife squarely into the heart of the opposing argument. It's not too much, but it seems necessary to add that blow in order to really make it understood where you stand on the matter. And I'm sure that we all have experienced the brushfire of problems that may follow those little words.
Sometimes, relationships are broken apart, never to heal, or reputations are ruined. The temptation to use these little verbal jabs are part of the range of rich language which we quickly acquire while growing up. Here, Ben Sira warned those teenage boys under Jewish instruction that loose lips with such little and depreciating words can spark much evil and human sorrow. Today, as we move about in daily life, it is wise to remember his advice. It will save much heartache in our relationships at home and elsewhere.
PRAYER
Lord God, quiet my mind and open my heart to receive your words of instruction to guide my spiritual growth. I give you thanks for your loving care, and in this and all things, I offer you myself that I may be an instrument of your love and peace in this world. Amen.
