James 2:1-7
My siblings, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.
If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear siblings: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom promised those who love God?
But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of God to whom you belong?
Cheer up the Lonely Day
Cathedral of Hope takes up its cross by feeding the hungry and helping homeless.
Old churches of my past had the idea that it was a burden to take up your cross for God. The CoH version is that it is a blessing to be able to help others as we are blessed.
All are welcome at CoH and there is no dress code for our worship services. While we may often dress in our finest, we are comfortable to dress casually. We always welcome guests regardless of the status of their clothing. The scripture above reminds us too many houses of worship focus on physical appearances!
We search out those in need by taking blessing bags monthly with us in our cars to give to those we see in need. These are a small token of God’s love to quench their thirst with a bottle of water. And to sustain their hunger by a bit of protein and crackers. And to help them with socks and toiletry items. It does not change someone’s food insecure situation, but it provides an intermediate help and a gift of Hope and love to show someone cares.
Our Taste of Hope groups gather on Tuesdays to cook complete meals for housing and food insecure. They collect donated food items. Prepare these meals either in the CoH kitchen or in people’s homes. And then our members lovingly box these meals and deliver them to the areas of Dallas where people are huddled with the garbage bags of their worldly belongings! It is a sight that bursts your heart open to see the love given and relieved in the form of a packaged meal!
Today may be marked as Cheer up the Lonely Day on the national calendar. But for Cathedral of Hope, Saturday morning BACH (Breakfast at Cathedral of Hope), Monday iCare and Tuesdays Taste of Hope each week are Cheer the Lonely and fill the stomach of the Hungry!
I think I see these things as fulfillment of what Jesus asked his followers to do. Not just one day a year. But every day of our lives
.
God of Lonely, Hungry and all in need; please show those of us who bear the name Christian how to reach out every day. Help us smile at all we see or give a blessing bag when we can. Help us see ways to show your love.
