Acts 7:9-10
Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with himand rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So, Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.
If you spend any time in youth ministry, you know the power and potential of retelling a story from the past.
“Do you remember that time when…”
“There was that one time we were on a road trip…”
“Every time I see Garrett and Emilie together, I think about…”
These stories do more than just connect us to our past. They conjure up feelings, lessons, laughter, and remembrance. Much of what we do in youth ministry is create memories that inform and inspire adolescents. These memories remind them of their relationship to the Divine and to their siblings in need.
Then there are those times where the narratives are uncomfortable and a reminder of complicity. These stories convict us and point out where things went wrong. When we honestly and inwardly digest these stories, they inspire lament and change.
In this narrative from the seventh chapter of Acts, Stephen reminds the Sanhedrin in a scathing rebuke of how many times throughout history their ancestors persecuted, betrayed, and murdered those sent by God and how they did so again with Jesus’ crucifixion. Stephen was so convincing and so convicting that the Sanhedrin did with him what they had done so many times in the past when confronted: They killed that messenger of God, too.
Our lives are full of our own stories:
Sometimes, we paid attention to the story. Other times, we shut our ears.
Sometimes, we heard the words of Jesus and obeyed his call. Other times, we closed our hearts to his calling.
Sometimes, we are confronted with how we fail to connect with God and repent. Other times, we refuse to be convicted and are stubborn and resistant.
In my Community Storytelling classes, we were urged to remember that when you confront a person or a people with their complicity, aggression, or apathy, you might get the Stephen treatment. But other times, you get honest reflection and action.
How will you hear the conviction of the Holy Spirit? May God give us the strength and courage to recognize, repair, and repent.
Let us pray,
Holy Spirit, open our eyes and ears to hear how you would convince and convict us, so that we may follow your call honestly and completely. Amen.
