SCRIPTURE
1 Corinthians 2.6-8
Yet we speak wisdom among those who are mature, although not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age knew it.
WORDS OF HOPE
When I was in college, the pop wisdom writer of the day was Kahlil Gibran. I’ve read a few hundred other gurus’ writings since that time, but I still remember much of what he had to say. One of my favorite quotes is this one:
“Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children.”
Most great wisdom writers remind me of Jesus. And Jesus often reminds me of writers who are wise. All of them have similar attitudes about rulers; the ones who consider themselves so wise that we would have little hope for survival without them to guide us or direct how we should live our lives. The Apostle Paul knew the type.
Paul wrote regarding the first century rulers who governed by the wisdom of that age, the misguided and distorted worship of power. They were clueless about the wisdom of God as preached through Jesus’ message of Love. His was the wisdom of admitting vulnerability; knowing when it’s all right to cry at the death of a close friend like Lazarus.
Jesus’ philosophy also provided room for good humor as he continually told parables laced with irony, the highest form of humor in his day, and his respect for children and their purity of faith is central to his teachings. His ways of living and loving were unknown to the insecure and humorless power brokers who would ultimately demand his crucifixion.
Paul predicted to the Corinthian church that such people would come to nothing, and he was right. He was speaking to the first century, but his wisdom permeates all generations, even influencing a ruler now and then. The power of love will do that.
PRAYER
May we always seek your wisdom, the wisdom that cries but also can laugh through difficult or uncertain times. May the child’s faith that lives within us lead us to it. Amen
