SCRIPTURE
2 Corinthians 3.17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
WORDS OF HOPE
Jesus was a man of many names and titles in the Bible. Name above all names, Prince of Peace, Son of man, Son of God, The Light, The Way, and so on. My favorite way to think about him has to do with his interactions with humankind.
I often think of Jesus as the greatest symbol of divine direction of how we human beings should treat each other. Jesus paid the ultimate price with his life to liberate us from our so-called sins. So, Liberator is my favorite title for Jesus.
To liberate us was perhaps his greatest feat; liberated meaning we are free to move about our lives with the function to carry out the work of love. That seems to be a tough one for us. We define it in many ways and often by how we choose to dole it out according to our convenience.
But the word itself carries significance for me as I remember all those friends and acquaintances I’ve crossed paths with who may never have realized what their presence in my life did for me. I think of my best friend who often liberates me from the concerns of the day by making me laugh so hard I literally forget my little troubles for a few minutes.
I think of my early boyfriends and partners who had no idea their function was to offer relief of some sort. The perfect positive charge over the negative. I can list specific friendships in my life in which neither of us realized at the time we were liberating each other from prejudices we may have suffered; from self -doubt, addiction, sadness, loneliness, sickness, disability.
Whether you have a devout belief in Jesus as the redeemer or maybe as your favorite liberator, look around you. Look back. Who played the Jesus role in easing your stress? Who do you lean on in times of trouble? Who were your liberators? We all have them. Ultimately that’s the job of each of us, isn’t it? What can you do today that may liberate someone of their troubles? Do you think of yourself as a liberator?
PRAYER
Thank you liberating me to be the liberator of others. Amen
