SCRIPTURE
James 1:17.
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation of shifting shadow.
WORDS OF HOPE
Her name was Luna.
My children picked her name, but let me embellish it, so I named her Bella Luna Lovegood. She was mostly Shih Tzu, but she was also a bit Terrier and a whole lot of sass. Luna joined our family when a family friend said that their frequently traveling daughter didn’t have the heart leave Luna in an apartment for long periods.
As a puppy, Luna was relentlessly playful. So much so that she occasionally drove my children to sit on the kitchen counter to keep Luna from biting their toes. Eventually, Luna grew up and mellowed out. Of all the dogs I’ve known, she was the most independent and most demanding… very much like a cat. She loved walks, but didn’t want to walk so much as want to explore and sniff things. At the dog park, she didn’t so much interact with other dogs but wandered around and surveyed the landscape.
As she grew older, Luna became very chunky, lost many of her teeth, lost her sense of hearing, and suffered from bladder stones. But she loved treats, was excited to meet people, especially children, and loved routine, especially bedtime.
As you may have guessed, several ailments caught up to her and we had to put Luna down. It was the day after Christmas.
Luna taught me that we don’t “own” our pets. She was far too independent for that. Instead, she taught me that she was a present to be treasured and shared, like the presents we unwrap on Christmas morning. She insisted that she was a gift and we should all be gifts to one another.
The apostle James reminds us that every good thing is a gift from God above. Luna was a gift from God that taught me about the nature of God. Being affectionate, playful, inquisitive, funny, and loving, every little thing Luna did reminded me of the goodness of God. Also, being occasionally stubborn, aloof, and demanding also reminded me of the sometimes-challenging nature of God. Luna showed me that most of the best and worst aspects of our pets are shadows of the care, love, and stubborn nature of God.
Psalm 34:18 reminds us that God is a God of all comfort and comes near when our hearts are broken. I’ve leaned heavily on those words throughout my life and most recently with Luna. Thanks be to God for the gift of Luna and thanks be to God that she walks a little closer to me now.
PRAYER
Gentle Shepherd, thank you for the gift of Luna and for the gift of all of our animal friends who have been in our lives. Show us how grieving this loss can be an act of worship, acknowledging your good gifts. Thank you for being present with us as we walk through the difficult times and remind us that every good and perfect gift is from you. Amen.
