SCRIPTURE
Luke 2. 16-19
And the Shepherds went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.
WORDS OF HOPE
The familiar words of today’s reading are from the greatest Christmas story ever told, the original, written in the words of the beloved physician, Luke. As far as we know, Luke was a traveling companion of the Apostle Paul and a prolific researcher and author of both the third Gospel and the Book of Acts. In the introduction his Gospel, he is specific in letting the reader know that his writings are the result of much research and many eyewitness accounts of the life and works of Jesus.
It is therefore reasonable to presume that Mary herself would have been Luke’s most logical eyewitness to all the events that were the prelude to the birth of the Christ, her own son. Only she could have known the details of the Angel Gabriel’s announcement, Elizabeth’s prophesy about her child, and of her own feelings on that night her precious son was born.
If these are truly Mary’s recollections, her interview with Luke occurred after her son’s ministry on earth had concluded and she had seen him grow from that infant in the manger to an adult who had more than fulfilled the words of Gabriel’s and Elizabeth’s predictions. She was a proud mother looking back on the achievements of her son. Those predictions would have been the center of Mary’s meditations that first Christmas night as she gazed on the innocent face of her miracle child. Her husband-to-be, Joseph, stood beside her in eloquent silence, also aware of what inevitably lay before them as Mary faithfully contemplated the divine destiny of her first born.
On this Christmas Day, amid all the presents and celebrations, surrounded by paper angels, plastic bells, battery operated candles, and old Bing Crosby tunes, I remember Mary, kneeling silently in the wet straw of that cold Bethlehem stable, pondering in her heart the treasure in her arms; the infant Messiah, God’s greatest gift to her and ultimately, to the world. The light had begun to shine. That was and is the essence of Christmas.
“I will l honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all year long.”
— Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
