SCRIPTURE
Luke 2:7
She gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger because there was no room available for them.
WORDS OF HOPE
In looking for a newborn baby gift, I felt a dozen or more receiving blankets until I found one that was perfect, soft, and cute. While standing in line to pay, I heard “silent night” amongst the Christmas songs and thought about the birth of Christ.
He didn’t have a soft blanket for his new crib, instead he was wrapped in cloth to protect his soft skin from the straw lined manger, a feeding trough for barn animals that cradled the Son of God.
Luke mentions the manger three different times as he tells the story of Jesus’ birth. The manger depicting Jesus’ humble birth symbolizes a profound and moving truth as the Son of God, was placed into a trough. This linked the powerful image of Jesus’ first bed as a place where God’s humble and poor creatures would be fed.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a town that means “House of Bread”.
The manger was a sign that Jesus came to offer himself as bread for our souls and is the only one who can truly satisfy the hunger of our hearts.
Our hearts hunger to know we are loved and that our lives have meaning and purpose. We desire to know we are forgiven, can experience grace, are not alone, and there is always hope as we hunger to know that even death will not be our end.
Joseph was turned away by many as he sought a place for the Holy family to stay. Those people had no room in their lives for Jesus or his teachings. At Christmas, as a helpless infant, Jesus showed us that worldly goods don’t bring happiness and it was the shepherds, not the elite of Jerusalem who found Christ in the manger. The manger became empty as Jesus left but the bread of life remains eternal.
PRAYER
Holy one, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus let us remember, your baby boy, is the everlasting bread of life for all humankind! In Jesus name, Amen
