SCRIPTURE
2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
WORDS OF HOPE
The Other Side of Shame
What is this thing called peace and why is it so elusive? There’s an enemy in the house, in the temple, and in our hearts. True peace that lasts, that’s what we seek. So, we try to take it by force, and we fail. We try to provide it for our families, and we still fail. We can’t give it and we can’t take it, so what then? Effort has gotten us nowhere. I seek for that which I don’t understand because it feels like something is missing. I call it peace or freedom from conflict because I think that will be easier.
I’m sick of children crying because they’ll never get to see their fathers again. Mothers are mourning over sons who slay one another like Cain and Abel. We’ve been praying, asking for what we want without giving any thought to what we lack. In this world, there can be no peace without forgiving hearts. The willingness to pardon the conflict raging on the inside until it reaches out. Peace is an endless day in the middle of spring that exists in my dreams. We keep looking up for the answer hoping and praying. Deep down inside, I know that I will have to look at myself for a solution.
If peace is freedom from war, then I must do the impossible. I will lay down my arms. I will stop pointing the gun at myself, at my neighbor, and at my friend. I will forgive, for when I am angry at myself, I am angry at others. If I am angry at others, then it is because I am still angry at myself.
PRAYER
Perfect Husband,
Grant us courage, strength, humility, and the love to look at ourselves with kindness. Show us what peace looks like when we stop trying and start living without regret. And that on the other side of shame is serenity. There is so much light in self-love illuminating the darkness with an endless day. Amen.
