Romans 8.35-39
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?... I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
WORDS OF HOPE
I have officiated several funerals in my years of service to the church, and in each one I quoted today's Scripture reading from Paul's letter to the Romans. The words are an eloquent means of comfort and peace to those who are mourning their loss. The passage should speak to us daily however, in times when news reports are always reminding us that we should be desperate to seek reassurance that all will finally be well.
But, who's going to mend all of the world's insurmountable problems? We have a generous roster of potential saviors, mainly self-help motivational speakers and politicians, who have all the answers we want to hear to make our lives perfect again. There is always a price to pay, either to a particular party or through an online subscription, but we are assured that any price is a small price for our personal salvation. These superheroes await our convenient electronic contribution or automatic withdrawal, no troublesome paper checks necessary.
Our overwhelming or uncertain times have proven to be inspirations to a generous offering of superhero movies for quite a few years. They award us the opportunity to relax for a couple of hours knowing that a man or woman with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal humans will reward us with the happy ending we deserve. They are "gods among insects," as the evil Magneto maliciously observed in one of the X-Men movies. But we know that the true heroes are following some unwritten super-code to selflessly use their immeasurable strength and ability to fly for you and me, never for themselves.
One of the most internationally popular members of those elite saviors is more like you and me than his uniquely-gifted colleagues. He has no supernatural tendencies at all and today, the world celebrates his official holiday. It is International Batman Day, commemorating 80 years since the comic book character's debut in Detective Comics, later known as DC. Batman is just a regular guy who spends his evenings dressed as a huge bat that foils the world-dominating plans of an endless parade of villains who dress even more outrageously than he does. The real appeal of Batman, however, is that he gives us hope that an ordinary human can make a difference and if he can do it, so can we.
Cape and cowl aside, I believe Bruce Wayne is right. We each can indeed make a difference, and the first step toward that is taking the words of Paul in today's reading to heart. Love is the only source of power we need to carry in our personal utility belts. Read Paul's list. No villain conceivable, natural or supernatural, real or imagined, news report-generated or Twitter created, can separate us from the love of Christ. The heroic element for each of us is knowing the power of that love, first within our minds, and then practicing it in our actions toward others, no cape or super speed required.
PRAYER
God of all, you have given us creative minds and the capacity to follow the example of Christ in sharing the power of your love in a world that only love can heal. May we be your superheroes.
