SCRIPTURE
Philippians 2:12
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my
presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your
salvation with fear and trembling.
WORDS OF HOPE
By all accounts according to the church I attended, I had been saved when I
repeated all the right words, received baptism in the pool, and felt the
presence of the Holy Spirit. I was hopeful that gesture of love for God would
make me perfect and take away the daunting feelings I had for my best friend,
and it didn’t. Now my love for her grew more intense as we shared this deep
spiritual connection.
One Sunday service, feeling overwhelmed with shame for my thoughts, I sat in
the pew doubting God’s “love” for me! Suddenly the preacher slammed his fist
onto the pulpit and screamed “you can’t hide your sins from God, work out
your own salvation with fear and trembling”. Oh no, somehow, he knows my
secret and now I am going to hell!
What exactly did that screaming man mean? Unfortunately for these types of
believers who preach a gospel of performance, this isn’t what this verse means
at all. First off, salvation isn’t something you have to work for; it’s a gift from
God received by faith. You don’t work for salvation; it works for you.
I left the religion where I felt condemned and began my personal walk with
Christ, where I stumbled more times than not. In the beginning as a new
believer, I had to discover what it was like to live and walk in faith. There was
strong trepidation at first to stop trusting in my natural abilities and trust in
God’s Word. This is what Paul is referring to when he mentions “fear and
trembling.” I believe he is showing us that in the beginning, it will seem scary
to walk by faith.
Working out our salvation is very different from working for our salvation.
When Paul says we need to work out our salvation, he is simply explaining that
the wonderful gift we freely received from God is inside. Faith is at rest, but it is
faith that works, not us. So, working out what is on the inside of us happens by
faith.
PRAYER
Holy one as each of us work through our personal fears, let us also have the
faith to accept your love is unconditional and everlasting. In Jesus name, Amen
