Acts 5:17-26
Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”
At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.
When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So, they went back and reported,“We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.
Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.
WORDS OF HOPE
This story in Acts tells us of the first jail break in the New Testament. There is nothing more
terrifying than a justice system rooted in corruption. In this case the system was also motivated by ‘jealousy’ (5:17).
The apostles have had great success with their evangelization, for we know that a record eight thousand people have joined their ranks and as 5:14 tells us, “a great number of both men and women were added to the Lord.”
If you were the high priest of the Sadducees, you must have felt so helpless when dealing with the apostles. A minute ago, you have locked them up in prison, but the next minute, you find that they are gone, despite the prison cell being perfectly secured! Immediately after that, you find them back at what they were doing before —preaching the word of God to the people.
God’s ways are indeed hard for us to comprehend! God sent angels to rescue the apostles, and sent them back into the temple courts again to share God’s word.
The arrest of the apostles is not motivated by wrongdoing on their part but because of jealousy on the part of no less than the High Priest and a sect of the Sadducees.
PRAYER
Dear God, help us challenge the systems of oppression and brokenness so that one day the world may be one, and know the love of your son Jesus Christ. May the world be transformed in love and grace to be fully inclusive and loving without exception. In the gracious name of Jesus, Amen.
