Matthew 26: 27
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them saying, “drink from it, ALL of you”
WORDS OF HOPE
While sitting in a crowded cafe waiting for more coffee, I was struck by the servers rushing back and forth refilling coffee containers to keep everyone’s cup filled. Obviously, it was a tedious endeavor with so many empty cups to keep filled. As the server walked by, I heard a person say, “please, will you fill my empty cup”.
I thought for a moment about my spiritual walk with God and how the cup is such a metaphor in our daily lives. We fill our cups to quench a physical thirst and spiritually Jesus promised when we drink the living water he provides, our spirits will be renewed, and we will never thirst again.
The verse from this song says it all…” take my cup Lord, I lift it up Lord, come and quench this thirsting of my soul. Bread of Heaven feed me till I want no more, fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole”. The Hymnist is simply saying, I desire more of your presence, love, and grace Lord, I just want more of you!
Out of love, Jesus was always pouring out of his cup even when he was about to endure unthinkable pain, out of love, he drank from that cup and said, “thy will be done”.
When we are feeling empty and need spiritual replenishment, scripture assures us, by asking in prayer, we can be spirit filled with the promise of hope, peace, and love. When our spiritual cups get empty, we deprive ourselves and others from receiving the blessings we are called to share.
Set time aside every day, throughout the day to let God Love on you and keep your cup filled to overflowing. ALL of us are called to drink from the cup!
PRAYER
Creator God, give us wisdom to fill up our empty cups with your love and when our cups are running over, give us the desire to fill the cups of one another. In Jesus name, Amen
