SCRIPTURE
Luke 9:1-2
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
WORDS OF HOPE
Early in his ministry, Jesus calls the Twelve and he sends them out to proclaim the realm of God and to heal the sick. Jesus instructs them to travel light: no walking staff to aid the journey, no bag to bring things or to collect things, no bread to eat and no money to buy bread. They are to rely on the hospitality of the poor.
While they are present in a town, they stay as long as they are welcomed. That could be for days or that could be instant rejection. And if they are rejected, shake that dust of their feet (I hear Taylor Swift in the background) and don’t give it another thought.
These instructions put the Twelve in the place of depending on God for provision and guidance and relying on others’ hospitality. Perhaps this is to help the Twelve to be focused on the mission, perhaps this is a test of faith. This dependency on what God and neighbor provides shows a simplicity and urgency of their mission. The emphasis is on spreading the Good News with humility and, most importantly, trust in God’s provision. All of this is preparation for the larger work they will undertake later.
Perhaps the message here is easy for us to understand and hard for us to implement. When it comes to spreading the Good News and bringing healing to those around us, this narrative speaks to clearing away those things that drag our focus away. It can cause us to longingly cling to our own understanding and our own sense of propriety. We cleave to our own knowledge so dependently, that we find ourselves dragged down and hindered by hubris and self-reliance. And that’s when doubt about our calling and mission creep in.
What we often overlook is the powerful statement in the first verse of Luke 9, where Jesus gives His disciples "power and authority to drive out all demons and cure diseases." This is a tremendous gift from Christ, and we should recognize the weight of it. We are called to take seriously the empowerment He offers for His mission, remembering to be grateful not only for the authority He bestows upon us, but also for the hospitality and support of others who help carry out that mission.
In this passage, we are challenged to clear away distractions, resist self-reliance, and embrace the empowerment Christ offers, understanding that our calling is not only a privilege but also a responsibility, requiring both gratitude and trust in God's guidance.
PRAYER
Loving Savior, help us to trust You fully, relying on Your provision and the hospitality of others as we step out in faith. Teach us to travel light, free from distractions and self-reliance, and to remain focused on the mission You've entrusted to us. May we move forward with humility and urgency, confident in Your guidance, and willing to go wherever You lead. In Jesus' name, Amen
