1 Peter 2:9-10 (The Message)
But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.
WORDS OF HOPE
This early letter to the forming gatherings of believers in Jesus was written by Peter. He was a fisherman and became a disciple. His letter was designed to encourage those who were suffering from persecution and to offer them a word of hope. Peter wanted to make sure that they knew who they were in relationship to Jesus. He also wanted to help them understand that the suffering of Jesus was something that they too would endure before they were, like Jesus, exalted.
In Chapter 2, Peter calls them to their fullness. He says that they are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, instruments to do God’s holy work and to speak out. To tell others of the transformation that has been made in their lives.
These are themes that we often lift here at Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ. Many of our community have faced persecution, rejection, ostracism, and exclusion. We have been criticized for our beliefs and for having the absolute audacity to believe that God loves us, just as we are.
We are not a dissimilar people to the ones that Peter writes this letter -and his response to people who were living as strangers in what was often a hostile world. Peter invites them into the suffering, the persecution, knowing that there is a cost to discipleship and that their ability, our ability, to remain faithful would ultimately be rewarded.
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. You are a royal priesthood, a holy people, called and chosen by God.
Together, we are the people of God called to the holy work of justice and our experience of rejection, our ostracism, our oppression is a gift that enables us to claim our identity as believers in God. No longer in this place, but filled with a new identity, we use this gift to align ourselves with those to whom Jesus aligned Himself and offer hope, freedom and yes, a place at the table.
This is our challenge and our invitation today.
So, can you hear these words? Can you hear that you belong to God-that you are a royal priesthood, instruments to do God’s work and to speak out for God?
I sincerely hope so – amid all the other noises in our world today, claim your place as a believer, as a child of a living and loving God.
PRAYER
God, thank you that you have claimed me as your own. Thank you for having set your seal on me. Thank you that I am chosen, royal, holy, and someone who belongs to God. Amen.
