SCRIPTURE
Mathew 18:1-5, 10
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
If you are as humble as this child, you will be the greatest in heaven.
WORDS OF HOPE
Deep breath, and again, deep breath
Let us recall we are in the holy presence of God.
The disciples were as curious as any random group of Jews at the time of Jesus. They were always asking questions of information, of clarification or curiosity. On this particular day, some of them wondered out loud, who would be the greatest in the kingdom of God. Jesus, no doubt knew that they were asking about the secular kingdom they expected Jesus to create.
To help make this point he called a child who was nearby to come over and stand close to him. The child was a “visual aid“ that Jesus used to illustrate his point, that is: unless you are like this child, you will not enter the kingdom of God. You must be this innocent, this loving. Without bias, or ill will. Simplicity is the mark of a child, as is the mark of a person in the kingdom. The disciples had to take this message under advisement to be used for further reflection and deeper understanding.
Whenever Jesus speaks to us in scripture, be sure to remember the layers of understanding there may be.
PRAYER
Oh, holy one, thanks for visiting with us once again today. Your message is particularly simple and understandable. Our love must be pure and unsophisticated; not only toward God, but for those who are in our family-and-friend circle. Help us to keep this in our minds’ focus. We ask this through your many names, Amen.
